CHAPTER HISTORY

The Lumberton Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered on May 5, 1991, with 15 charter members: Vanessa Evans Burton, Madelyn Clawson, Veda Cleaves, Rita Floyd, Rosie Ford, A. Louise Lassiter, Mahetta Rena Manning- Commedo, Phostenia McCrimmon, Gwen McKiver, Bonnie McNeill, Patricia McRae, Marilyn Merritt, Juanita Morant, Lucille Watson, and Jennifer Williams.

The chapter membership is comprised of college educated women who hold degrees in the fields of banking, business, education, healthcare, law, medicine, real estate, and research. Leadership began with Charter Chapter President Phostenia McCrimmon. Since her tenure there have been ten presidents: A. Louise Lassiter, Wanda H. Dockery, Cheryl T. Powell, Erica McComb, Paulette Baldwin, Leslie Tukes, Carolyn F. Robinson, Nuchelle Atkinson, Frankie Denise Powell and current president Vanessa Evans Burton.

The chapter service area is Robeson County, North Carolina.
Lumberton Alumnae’s mission is to provide public service to the citizens of Robeson County by enhancing their lives with voter information, educational scholarships, and health initiatives.

The Lumberton Alumnae Chapter supports our National public service efforts through our “Five Point Programmatic Thrust” by conducting Financial Literacy Forums, voter registration, sponsoring an annual Rhythm of Your Heart Walk, and partnering with Good Health Wins to inform and educate on the importance of COVID, FLU, and other vaccinations. The Chapter also participates in Breast Cancer Awareness, Deltas Go Red Heart Health Awareness, Diabetes Awareness, Health Care Fairs, and Read Across America. In addition, Lumberton Alumnae provides collegiate scholarships through its HBCU Scholarship program, and Jabberwock Scholarship Pageant. The chapter’s programs are motivated by its Delta CARES initiative whose primary focus is to provide service and resources to our community to improve the lives of our citizens.

The Lumberton Alumnae Chapter will continue to honor our Founders by supporting the underserved, with a dedicated focus to serve our community through Sisterhood, Scholarship, Service and Public Service.
Lumberton Alumnae Chapter was awarded the National Reclamation Award for 2020-2021. The Chapter continues to focus on reclamation and membership to allow the Chapter to better serve Robeson County.
The Chapter is composed of members whose professions include computer science, education, entrepreneurship, law, medicine, real estate, and social work. Some notable members of the Chapter include:

1. Gwendolin “Ghee” Bain Johnson (deceased) former Town Commissioner, St. Pauls, North Carolina
2. Katherine Bethea recipient of the Order of the Longleaf Pine, North Carolina’s highest civilian award
3. Tonya Brown, Author – nominated and recognized by “Black Girls Who Write”
4. Vanessa Evans Burton, first female Assistant District Attorney in the county and Robeson County District Court Judge- retired
5. Pamela Carlson, 2021 North Carolina Band Director of the Year
6. Isabel Jones, Robeson County Principal of the Year 2018-2019
7. SaVon Maultsby first chapter member to earn a Doctorate in Education/Supervision
8. Gwen McKiver, Chapter Poet Laureate.
9. Marilyn Merritt, National recognition for 50 years of membership in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. & 2021 “Sensational Soror” for the South Atlantic Region of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
10.Kewanda Merritt, recipient of the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust Grant for the non-profit “Connect Community, Inc.
11.Viv Wayne, National recognition for 50 years of membership.
